National awards triumph for new independent stationery store

Staff at Biz+ Stationery Superstore are celebrating after winning a major industry award for excellence just 16 months after they opened for business.

And for owner Richard Dorman the accolade is proof that personal service, a great selection of branded products, everyday low prices and a friendly, professional team are a winning combination.

Biz+ Stationery Superstore, situated on Westgate Retail Park, Gloucester, recently won the Retail Member of the Year Award at the Office Club Awards at the Belfry Hotel, Birmingham.

Office Club is a buying network of over 250 independent suppliers of stationery and office products, so the success was quite a coupe for such a young business.

Richard Dorman said: “We are thrilled and proud to have won the award. It is a tribute to the hard work of everyone in the team at Biz+.

“Here we are, a new concept, a new team and from a standing start in 16 months we have won a national award for the best retail shop. That is astounding. We must be doing something right.”

“Because we are independent, we have a real interest in what we are doing. Our team is interested and motivated, I think that makes a difference, and I think it shows.”

Biz+ has over 8,500 different products available in-store, offering a huge range of Office Products and Stationery for Home, Office and College. And Biz+ will not be beaten on printer cartridges with a price match guarantee.

“We work really hard on our pricing, and are able to get many of our products on the shelves cheaper than the internet and our national rivals like Viking and Staples” said Richard. So how are the low prices achieved? Biz+ seeks out the best deals from its suppliers and these are passed on to the customers.

The print shop at Biz+, can provide everything from flyers, booklets and A1 posters to business cards and personalised wall planners, with same day printing service available.

Biz+ is a family business headed by Richard, and manager Lisa Coll, with his son Andy in the store team together with Hattie Grindle, Becky Sunderland and Kim Riach.

Training is very important for Biz+. Both Andy and Hattie were apprentices and successfully gained their NVQ Diploma’s in retailing this year. Hattie is now studying for Diploma in Business management with the Open University.

“People are beginning to discover that we are here and we are seeing 25 per cent growth in sales on last year. We have customers visiting us from as far as Cheltenham and they are coming back again and again.”

Richard has exciting plans to extend the services Biz+ provides by putting the shop online and offering local deliveries within the next 12 months. “We are bucking the trend, and I believe Biz+ is something Gloucester can be proud of” said Richard.
